SB1215 Tax Exemption for Veterans
The recent enactment of SB1215 has removed the July 1, 2023, deadline for any 100% permanently disabled veterans or their surviving spouses to be eligible for their annual Sales Tax exemption. New Exemption Cards will soon be mailed to those veterans and surviving spouses who had submitted registry verification letters to the Oklahoma Tax Commission (OTC), but were denied new Exemption Cards because they missed the registration deadline of July 1, 2023. No additional action is required on the part of those veterans or their surviving spouses. The OTC estimates that it will take approximately three weeks to process and issue the new cards to individuals falling within this category. Similarly, veterans or surviving spouses who filed a protest or requested a hearing in response to the denial letter for new Exemption Cards will receive their new Exemption Cards without the need for further action. The OTC will mail the new Exemption Cards and notify the office of the Administrative Law Judge that the protest has been resolved. Also, eligible veterans and surviving spouses who were previously notified they needed a registry letter or verification of benefits from the Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs, can still obtain that letter and documentation as per the instructions provided in that letter.
